Lucy Alphin Silent Strength Founder

Lucy Alphin is the founder and President of Silent Strength, a youth-led nonprofit dedicated to awareness, education, and support for individuals living with invisible illnesses.

From Athlete to Advocate

Lucy’s background is rooted in elite athletics. Beginning gymnastics in kindergarten and transitioning to competitive cheerleading, she eventually joined her high school varsity team as a flyer and elite tumbler. Her athletic career was marked by discipline and high achievement, but also by a series of significant injuries, including multiple bilateral fractures.

In early 2024, a major cheer injury led to the first of several knee and shoulder reconstructions. After a subsequent concussion in competitive diving resulted in prolonged neurological symptoms, Lucy underwent a comprehensive evaluation at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). There, she was diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), Craniocervical Instability (CCI), and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).

These diagnoses provided critical clarity but required permanent retirement from impact sports. Faced with the loss of her identity as an athlete, Lucy chose to reshape her trajectory toward civic leadership and advocacy.

"Receiving a diagnosis may have closed one door, but it opened a much more important one. State Competition for Cheer and Youth in Government are always on the same weekend, so I would never have discovered my passion for advocacy and politics if I had not lost the ability to be an athlete. It explained why my body was breaking, but more importantly, it gave me a mission: to make sure no one else has to fight these invisible battles in silence."

Academic and Civic Leadership

Despite the demands of ongoing surgical recovery and managing complex symptoms, Lucy has maintained a distinguished academic and leadership record:

National Honor Society: Inducted for her academic excellence and character.
Youth in Government (YIG): Selected as one of only 25 South Carolina delegates to attend the national conference (CONA), where she was recognized for her leadership.

Pageantry with Purpose: As US Miss Palmetto State Jr. Teen and LMSC Miss Teen Capital City, she uses her platform to bring national attention to the realities of invisible disabilities.

The Mission of Silent Strength

Founded when Lucy was 15, Silent Strength emerged from her lived experience navigating systemic misunderstanding and shifting identity. The organization is governed by a youth board of individuals who also live with invisible illnesses, ensuring their work remains authentic and rooted in real-world experience.

Through youth-led leadership and dedicated advocacy, Lucy is building a supportive community where invisible illnesses are met with the recognition and support they deserve. She advocates for a world where "invisible doesn’t mean insignificant," focusing on providing accurate education and fostering a community where every person is treated with dignity.
