Education about Invisible Illnesses
Understanding what can’t always be seen
An invisible illness is any chronic medical condition that is not immediately apparent to others. These conditions often affect how a person feels, functions, and moves through daily life—even when there are no visible signs.
Invisible illnesses may involve pain, fatigue, neurological changes, immune dysfunction, or sensory differences. Because they are unseen, they are often misunderstood, overlooked, or questioned.
At Silent Strength, we help bridge the gap between perception and reality by connecting individuals, families, and educators with trusted resources. Our goal is to ensure that hidden challenges are met with understanding, compassion, and informed support—not assumptions.
Education is not about memorizing diagnoses—it is about learning how to see people more clearly.
Conditions and Resources
Brain & Nervous System
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a long-lasting condition marked by extreme exhaustion that doesn't improve with rest and worsens after physical or mental activity, often accompanied by pain, sleep issues, and concentration difficulties.
Chronic Pain Syndrome
Chronic pain syndrome is long-lasting pain that persists beyond normal healing time and is often accompanied by fatigue, mood changes, and difficulty carrying out daily activities.
Concussion
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a blow or jolt to the head, which can disrupt normal brain function and lead to symptoms like headache, dizziness, confusion, sensitivity to light or noise, and difficulty concentrating.
Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a long-lasting infection caused by bacteria transmitted through tick bites, leading to symptoms such as fever, fatigue, joint pain, and a characteristic expanding skin rash.
Migraine Headaches
Migraine headaches are intense, often throbbing headaches that can cause nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, and sometimes visual or sensory disturbances called auras.
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is a condition where the immune system attacks the protective coating of nerves, disrupting communication between the brain and body and causing symptoms that can vary widely over time.
POTS
POTS is a condition where the heart rate rises unusually high upon standing, leading to symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and feeling faint because the body struggles to regulate blood flow.
Digestive System
Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is a condition where the immune system reacts to gluten, damaging the small intestine and causing symptoms like stomach pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and nutrient problems.
Crohn's & Colitis
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are conditions where the immune system triggers inflammation in the digestive tract, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and fatigue.
Food Allergies
Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts to certain foods as if they’re harmful, causing symptoms that range from stomach discomfort to more serious reactions like trouble breathing.
Gastroparesis
Gastroparesis is a digestive condition in which the stomach empties more slowly than normal, causing symptoms like nausea, early fullness, bloating, and abdominal discomfort.
IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition that causes symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits without visible damage to the digestive tract.
Hormone & Body Regulation
Addison's Disease
Addison’s disease is a condition where the adrenal glands don’t make enough cortisol and sometimes aldosterone, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weight loss, low blood pressure, and salt cravings.
Cushing's Disease
Cushing’s disease is a condition where the body makes too much cortisol because of a hormone‑producing tumor in the pituitary gland, leading to symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, muscle weakness, and changes in mood or appearance.
Diabetes
Diabetes is a long‑lasting condition where the body has trouble regulating blood sugar, either because it doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use insulin effectively, leading to high blood sugar levels over time.
Thyroid Disease
Thyroid disease is a long-lasting condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t produce the right amount of hormones—either too much or too little—disrupting the body’s metabolism and affecting energy levels, heart rate, temperature regulation, and overall bodily functions over time.
Immune System
Lupus
Lupus is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, causing inflammation, pain, and symptoms that can affect many organs.
Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis is a long-term autoimmune condition that causes joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, often alongside skin symptoms like psoriasis, without the wear-and-tear damage seen in other forms of arthritis.
Sjögren’s Syndrome
Sjögren’s syndrome is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks moisture‑producing glands, leading to chronic dry eyes, dry mouth, and sometimes joint pain or fatigue.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the joints, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and long‑term inflammation.
Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is a condition where the immune system reacts to gluten, damaging the small intestine and causing symptoms like stomach pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and nutrient problems.
Food Allergies
Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts to certain foods as if they’re harmful, causing symptoms that can range from itching or stomach discomfort to more serious reactions like trouble breathing.
Joint, Muscle, & Body Structures
EDS
Ehlers‑Danlos syndrome is a group of genetic connective‑tissue conditions that can cause very flexible joints, fragile or stretchy skin, frequent joint pain, and a tendency for sprains or dislocations.
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a long‑lasting condition that causes widespread pain, fatigue, and sensitivity to touch, often along with sleep or concentration difficulties.
JIa

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the joints, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and long‑term inflammation.
Spina Bifida OcCulta
